Dan Perjovschi: Confronting authority in post-modern times

Dan Perjovschi is a Romanian artist, writer, and journalist who has gained international acclaim for his simple, cartoon-like drawings. His work is deeply embedded in the socio-political context, engaging and provoking by asking important questions about the reality we live in. Perjovschi often “installs” exhibitions himself—by painting them directly on the walls of museums. He has showcased his work in prestigious institutions like the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The artist is unafraid to tackle controversial subjects and is seen as someone who disrupts the established order. His drawings offer a critical and often cynical view of the contemporary world, full of absurdities and peculiarities. Through his work, he forces audiences to reflect on how they interpret and shape cultural heritage, often questioning the authority of institutions. His art is not only an artistic manifesto but also a call for dialogue on important contemporary issues.

His work is the focus of the latest episode of the “Holistic Heritage” podcast series. John Beauchamp and Katarzyna Jagodzińska spoke with Dan Perjovschi in Bucharest in October 2024 – fasten your seat belts, as it might get bumpy at times!
