What are the major concerns of the heritage sector? Who are the main heritage actors? Which issues are of major concern? What are the hottest places currently on the heritage agenda? “Heritage Voices” is a series of interviews with heritage makers and researchers, iconic and most influential figures of the heritage world.

“Heritage Voices” are complementary to our podcast series – “Holistic Heritage”, “Ukrainian Heritage Spotlight”, “Heritage Hour” and “Holistic Heritage: On The Road”. Now you can not only listen to us, but also read us.

Kraków is our vantage point – it is from here that we look out at the region of Central and Eastern Europe, but every now and then we will also look beyond our region for the latest heritage trends globally. The Conversations are realised interchangeably on-site in Kraków (recorded and available on-line) and on-line.

Heritage Voices: Mechtild Rössler on World Heritage in the framework of the List

Dr Mechtild Rössler, who was involved in the creation of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre already in 1992, shares her insights into the inscription processes for the World Heritage List and discusses the challenges and concerns surrounding its development and heritage conservation. The politization of nominations and the wrong intentions behind them seem to be the most alarming issues. Should we focus on better management of the sites that have already been inscribed, or do we need more sites on the list?

Heritage Voices: Stsiapan Stureika on the condition of Belarusian heritage

One of the greatest ambassadors of Belarusian heritage and internationally renowned scholar Dr Stsiapan Stureika shares his insights with us and reflects on the current condition of heritage in Belarus. This conversation comes as a result of research which we conducted in 2024 for the report “Mapping of the Central and Eastern European non-governmental heritage sector” (freely available here), which highlighted the challenging situation of the NGO heritage sector in Belarus. After a government crackdown on NGOs in 2021, the heritage sector has now lost its former shape.
